# Blip names

> How to make other scripts' blips show their real names, sizes and routes.

Blips from your other resources appear on the map on their own — you do not have to change anything for that. But they appear in a **basic form**: the right icon and colour, named `Blip 52`, and radius or area blips are left off because their size is unknown.

## Why

GTA lets a script *set* a blip's name and never *get* it back. There is no native that reads a blip's label — not for this resource and not for the script that created it. The same goes for the size of a radius or area blip.

So those details have to be caught at the moment they are set. That is what `blips.lua` does.

## Linking a resource — one line

Open the other resource's `fxmanifest.lua` and add this line **above its scripts**:

```lua
shared_script '@nobit_map/blips.lua'
```

The `@` prefix is FiveM's way of loading a file out of another resource. It has to come before the resource's own files, so it sees the blips as they are made.

Restart that resource. Its blips now carry their names, descriptions, sizes, radius and area shapes, routes, numbers, ticks and the rest.

### What this does to the resource

Nothing. Every function `blips.lua` watches calls straight through to the game and returns exactly what it returned. If `nobit_map` is stopped or missing, it quietly does nothing — the resource still works.

### Which resources need it?

The server console tells you. After start-up it prints one line like:

```
[nobit_map] 14 blip(s) come from resources that are not linked to the map; they are shown in a basic form. ...
```

with the blips listed by icon, so you can tell which resource they belong to. Link those resources and the line goes away.

If you would rather unlinked blips were not on the map at all, set `unlinkedBlips = 'hide'` in [Configuration](/docs/3d-map/configuration#blips-from-other-resources).

## Your own scripts

If you write the script, you can link it the same way, or name a blip directly:

```lua
local blip = AddBlipForCoord(coords.x, coords.y, coords.z)
exports.nobit_map:SetBlipTitle(blip, 'Pizza This')
```

Read it back with `GetBlipTitle(blip)`. For radius and area blips, see [For developers](/docs/3d-map/developers#circles-and-rectangles).

## When a name still does not appear

`blips.lua` is deliberately cautious. A confidently wrong name is worse than an obvious placeholder, so where it cannot rebuild a name exactly, it reports nothing and the blip keeps `Blip 52`.

That happens when the name is built from something that cannot be rebuilt from Lua: a formatted time, a float, a phone number, a website, a keyboard key, or a hashed text label.

In those cases, name the blip yourself with `SetBlipTitle`.

## Checklist

* [ ] `shared_script '@nobit_map/blips.lua'` added **above the scripts** in each resource whose blips you want complete
* [ ] Those resources restarted
* [ ] The console's "not linked" line is gone, or lists only resources you don't care about
